Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
