Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
